There are two types of volunteers who that take part in the La Crosse Christmas Bird Count – Section Counters and Feeder Counters.
Section Counters go in the field and count as many birds as possible in a pre-assigned section of the circle, either alone or as part of a count team. The count circle is divided into 26 or more sections that range from totally urban to mostly rural areas. Usually a combination of birding by foot and car is needed to cover each section.
Feeder Counters count the birds in their own yard. To participate as a Feeder Counter, you must live within the count circle.
A map of the count circle is located at: Map of the La Crosse CBC Circle
The La Crosse Christmas Bird Count is held on the first Saturday on or after December 14th of each year.
